The
Peroneal muscle
group attaches just below the outside of the knee
and runs down through the ankle joint and connects
to the outside of the foot. When they contract,
they raise the outside of the foot (eversion of the
foot). The trigger points found in the Peroneus
Longus and Brevis produce pain and tenderness just
above and behind the outside ankle bone. The pain
will sometimes also extend down the outside of the
foot.
Peroneus Tertius
trigger points typically produce pain and
tenderness on the front of the ankle that extends
down on the top of the foot.
Besides
pain, trigger points in these muscles make your
ankles feel weak and unstable. This instability
will often lead to ankle sprains. Additionally,
people often develop calluses on the outside of
their feet from abnormal walking mechanics.
Ankle Pain Introduction
Ankle
sprains or fractures will typically overload the
muscles in the lower leg, causing them to develop
trigger points. These trigger points tend to
persist long after the ankle has healed, causing
periodic pain flair-ups and general weakness. These
trigger points can also produce ankle pain without
injury, or any previous sprain or
fracture.
The Muscles and Trigger Points that Cause Ankle
Pain:
Trigger
points in the following muscles frequently produce
ankle pain.
-
Peroneus Longus
-
Peroneus Brevis
-
Peroneus Tertius
